Ruby: IO class

An instance of class IO (commonly called a stream) represents an input/output stream in the underlying operating system. Class IO is the basis for input and output in Ruby. Class File is the only class in the Ruby core that is a subclass of IO. Some classes in the Ruby standard library are also subclasses of IO; these include TCPSocket and UDPSocket.
